Fall of the House of Usher is coming soon to Netflix, and the first two seasons of The Haunting are still available to stream (and also available to buy on physical media). Flanagan confirmed that he is “happier” focusing on other things right now, and because he’s no longer involved with Netflix, it wouldn’t make much sense for the show to continue without him. Thankfully, The Haunting is an anthology show, so you can watch the two seasons available without worrying about cliffhangers or loose ends. I'm definitely not going to stop hoping for the day when Hell House's rights are freed up, but that's only assuming the Midnight Club creator will be first in line to snatch them up.

It is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. One of those projects includes Midnight Mass, which was a big horror hit in 2021. In fact, it was Midnight Mass that caused a stir on the Haunting social media accounts, not a new Haunting season. First of all, if you haven’t yet seen Midnight Mass, it has vibes very similar to Haunting. There are even several actors from Haunting who landed roles in the limited series, including Kate Siegel and Henry Thomas, who were in both Haunting seasons.

Based very loosely on the classic novel of the same name, this was a surprise hit for Netflix, who would work with the creator on many other projects too. The Haunting of Hill House skips from the present to the past as it explores the relationships between horribly flawed family members and the chilling events that happened at their haunted home.
In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain and their five children—Steven, Shirley, Theodora (Theo), Luke, and Eleanor (Nell)—move into Hill House to renovate the mansion in order to sell it and build their own house, designed by Olivia. However, due to unexpected repairs, they have to stay longer, and they begin to experience increasing paranormal phenomena, resulting in a tragic loss and the family fleeing from the house. Twenty-six years later, the Crain siblings and their estranged father reunite after another tragedy strikes them, and they are forced to confront how their time in Hill House has affected each of them.

However, both The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor debuted in October, though two years apart. That means The Haunting of [fill in the blank] could premiere in October 2022. However, Flanagan's latest comments push this release date back considerably. But after consuming all nine recent episodes (with or without the lights on), many wondered about the status of a third season. Flanagan is already working on an adaptation of the 1994 young adult novel The Midnight Club for Netflix as well as a series called Midnight Mass. The book also shows up in the Netflix movie Gerald's Game, which Flanagan directed. Looks like Netflix is becoming the new site of the Mike Flanagan horror universe, and we can't wait to be scared.
And that's also assuming the book isn't currently being adapted by someone far less talented. If you’re a Flanagan fan, you can stream Doctor Sleep on HBO Max or Before I Wake, Hush, and Gerald’s Game on Netflix. You could get really into reading ghost stories—or listening to them on tape like a DIY campfire—and come up with even more ideas than I did for season 3 and beyond.
When asked to decide whether Hill House or Bly Manor is scarier, Jackson-Cohen is torn. "They feel equally haunted. I don't know how much I'd want to live in either," he says. "Hill House is really not a properly operating house. At least in Bly the lights work," she says. There are countless famous books about houses in which human and ghostly inhabitants coincide.
If any show is safe to film in this climate, one would think it would be this one. The Haunting of Hill House received critical acclaim, particularly for its acting, directing, and production values. A follow-up series by Flanagan titled The Haunting of Bly Manor, with most of the same crew and some of the same cast but a different story and characters, was released on October 9, 2020.
