The TV creator told his followers on social media back in December that he had no plans to create a new instalment in the anthology, but speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he explained what would be needed for a third series to happen. This is a mega-popular series with a relatively small cast. Not to be flippant, but the characters in ghost stories are basically self-quarantined in their haunted houses, right?

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to throw the future of entertainment into whack. As the second season of the anthology series refers to the first, and also features some of the same cast members, it's easy to assume that a third season would continue both traditions. Given this pattern, will there be a third installment in Flanagan's Haunting series? If the cast has any say in the matter, the answer is a resounding yes. Much like Ryan Murphy's horror anthology American Horror Story, the Haunting series features the same actors playing new characters—and "the regulars" are open to returning.

On December 23, the anthology's creator squashed rumors of a new installment on Twitter. "At the moment there are no plans for more chapters," Flanagan wrote in response to a fan question. "Never say never, of course, but right now we are focused on a full slate of other @intrepid projects for 2021 and beyond. If things change we will absolutely let everyone know!" Intrepic refers to his production company, Intrepid Pictures. Before Flanagan's tweet, hope for a third season was still alive and well. After all, fans had to wait four months after the premiere of The Haunting of Hill House for season 2 to be confirmed in February 2019. When the series was renewed, Variety reported that Netflix had signed a multi-year deal with show creator Mike Flanagan and executive producer Trevor Macy.

After delivering one of the streaming giant’s biggest word-of-mouth sensations in 2018 with “The Haunting of Hill House,” the two have struck gold again as the 2020 follow-up “The Haunting of Bly Manor” currently sits atop Netflix’s most-watched chart. A third “Haunting” installment would appear to be a no-brainer for Netflix, but Flanagan confirms to Entertainment Weekly that a Season 3 is not in active development at the moment. The first two seasons of the anthology are based on Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and Henry James’s The Turn of The Screw, respectively. Those two books are pretty much always at the top of gothic horror and/or romance lists, and there are so many more classics in the genre that future seasons in the anthology could adapt. The Haunting of… has not officially been renewed by Netflix yet, although honestly, that doesn’t seem to matter these days—Netflix has been taking spooky season a bit too literally and ax-murdering its original programming.

Even if it would now probably have to exist outside of any connections to Hill House and Bly Manor, since Flanagan's overall deal with Netflix expired after Usher. I mean, it could be a C-SPAN Original Series, and I would still be downright possessed by anticipation. Despite being entirely separate from the Haunting series, fans will see a number of familiar faces, including Kate Siegel and Henry Thomas, who each starred in both of the Haunting seasons.
Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, the title alone will have the hairs on the back of the necks of horror fans everywhere standing up. For decades, horror fans have been fascinated by the lore of controversial writer HP Lovecraft, and there have been various attempts to bring his work to the screen over the years, with varying degrees of success. As the show’s presence ascended, it would attract many A-list celebrities to take part, but some fans would complain that they forgot to keep it scary and credible. However, there are still some scares to be found in the early seasons before it descends into camp and cliche. Macy confirmed to Vanity Fair that future seasons would continue to adapt horror novels, calling the first two installments "a literary remix." Based very loosely on the classic novel of the same name, this was a surprise hit for Netflix, who would work with the creator on many other projects too. The Haunting of Hill House skips from the present to the past as it explores the relationships between horribly flawed family members and the chilling events that happened at their haunted home.
In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain and their five children—Steven, Shirley, Theodora (Theo), Luke, and Eleanor (Nell)—move into Hill House to renovate the mansion in order to sell it and build their own house, designed by Olivia. However, due to unexpected repairs, they have to stay longer, and they begin to experience increasing paranormal phenomena, resulting in a tragic loss and the family fleeing from the house. Twenty-six years later, the Crain siblings and their estranged father reunite after another tragedy strikes them, and they are forced to confront how their time in Hill House has affected each of them.

However, both The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor debuted in October, though two years apart. That means The Haunting of [fill in the blank] could premiere in October 2022. However, Flanagan's latest comments push this release date back considerably. But after consuming all nine recent episodes (with or without the lights on), many wondered about the status of a third season. Flanagan’s “Hill House” star Kate Siegel is appearing in “Midnight Mass” opposite Zach Gilford, Hamish Linklater, Annabeth Gish, Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, and Henry Thomas, among others. Flanagan is already working on an adaptation of the 1994 young adult novel The Midnight Club for Netflix as well as a series called Midnight Mass. This is not connected to or part of the Hill House and Bly Manor anthology.

And that's also assuming the book isn't currently being adapted by someone far less talented. If you’re a Flanagan fan, you can stream Doctor Sleep on HBO Max or Before I Wake, Hush, and Gerald’s Game on Netflix. You could get really into reading ghost stories—or listening to them on tape like a DIY campfire—and come up with even more ideas than I did for season 3 and beyond.
When asked to decide whether Hill House or Bly Manor is scarier, Jackson-Cohen is torn. "They feel equally haunted. I don't know how much I'd want to live in either," he says. "Hill House is really not a properly operating house. At least in Bly the lights work," she says. There are countless famous books about houses in which human and ghostly inhabitants coincide.
If any show is safe to film in this climate, one would think it would be this one. The Haunting of Hill House received critical acclaim, particularly for its acting, directing, and production values. A follow-up series by Flanagan titled The Haunting of Bly Manor, with most of the same crew and some of the same cast but a different story and characters, was released on October 9, 2020.
